It’s sort of funny how Moriarty only had a few appearances in Sherlock Holmes stories and was directly written in to kill him off, and every adaptation afterward has made him a criminal mastermind and the Joker to Holmes’ Batman.

Eh...while I don't doubt that Lupin III didn't kill Watson, I don't think he's doing this to help Lily. He's after the Raven's treasure, and the only person who has a clue is Lily. He deliberately showed himself to Lily to jog her memories. While that does mean that Lupin is protecting her from harm so that he can get the treasure, it still means he's using her.
